The Academy of Science of SA said this week: "No evidence whatsoever has been found to suggest that healthier eating was a substitute for correctly used medical drugs."
Cosatu spokesman Patrick Craven said yesterday: "These findings reinforce the correctness of the policy in the HIV and Aids and sexually transmitted infections national strategic plan for South Africa 2007-2011, which emphasises ARV access and integrating HIV and TB care."
Craven said the plan was a major breakthrough for the fight against HIV-Aids.
"This report by distinguished scientists should help us to focus even more on implementing the plan's target to making ARV treatment freely available to all those who need it."
The report said there was no scientific evidence specific to South African conditions backing nutrition as a primary treatment for HIV-Aids. - Sapa
