More than 90percent of construction companies visited by labour inspectors in the Eastern Cape recently had violated occupational health and safety regulations, the Labour Department said yesterday.

Spokesman Zolisa Sigabi said the first two days of nationwide construction workplace inspections showed an "alarming" dip in labour law compliance.

"Inspections of one of the leading industries of workplace fatalities exposed employers as breaking the law," she said.

The two-week labour blitz started on Monday and will end next Friday.

She said Eastern Cape employers who failed to comply with regulations, were issued with contravention notices. Of 33 employers 31 were issued with notices. - Sapa
