Stick to what you know best

The construction industry is diverse, so you should make sure to stick to the area you know best if you want to run a successful business.

The construction industry is diverse, so you should make sure to stick to the area you know best if you want to run a successful business.

Construction ranges from residential to industrial and commercial projects.

Parliament established the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) to provide leadership in the industry, stimulate sustainable growth, reform and improve the sector for effective delivery and to enhance the industry's role in South Africa's economy.

A successful contractor must be well informed about his business.

He must also know its limitations, which often requires professional advice.

South Africa owes much of its economic success to its extensive infrastructure, such as residential and office buildings, factories, highways, ports, bridges, dams and mines. They were all put up by the vibrant and effective construction industry.

The construction industry must maintain and extend this infrastructure.

But as an emerging contractor you must prove you have potential to make a contribution.

For you to be able to take advantage of opportunities presented by South Africa's construction industry, you need to register your company with the CIDB.

Only contractors registered with the CIDB are considered for tenders in the public sector.

The CIDB register contractors for specific categories such as building, civil, electrical or engineering.

After registration, your company is given a grading code according to its track record, financial and technical ability.

This will qualify the company for projects in that category and grade.

The CIDB monitors your company's performance to establish a track record: the better your record, the bigger the jobs you are allowed to tackle.

Your company's details will be put in a database that is eligible to compete for public-sector projects.

Registration enhances contractors' success rate by matching capabilities with appropriate opportunities.

It enhances the ability of the company's ability to identify suitable partners and sub-contractors.
