Awande Zwane is a 14-year-old high-flyer and the best in her school when it comes to debate.
A grade 9 pupil at St Michael's School for Girls in Bloemfontein, she won a debating contest at her school in May.
Together with other top achievers at her school, they are to travel to several European countries to participate in debating contests and other educational activities in June next year. But, there is a hitch.
Awande has no money and might not realise her dream if she is unable to raise the required fares to travel overseas.
To undertake the 17-day trip, Awande is required to pay R25000 before the end of October.
So far, she has only managed to raise R5000.
Awande said: "Because of financial constraints this opportunity might fall away. Any amount of sponsorship will be appreciated".
Her school principal Kathy Pienaar describes the child as one of the strong debaters in the school.
"She is highly motivated and always strives to be the best. We believe that she will benefit from this opportunity," Pienaar said.
Sowetan spoke to Awande yesterday and she sounded confident and enthusiastic.
"I always strive to achieve my best. Even at primary school I was always chosen for the Olympiad examinations on behalf of our school because of my high academic performance," she said.
Awande, who is passionate about language and studies Portuguese, says the trip to Europe will help broaden her knowledge.
"The experience of being in Europe as a young South African girl would mean that I will learn new skills. It will also help me in my debating skills," said Awande.
When not engaged in school debates or studying Portuguese, Awande plays netball to relax.
"It is very important for me to stay focused," said Awande.
Awande's mother, Tutu Zwane, said she was proud of her daughter.
"I just wish that she does not get disappointed.
"She is a good student and works hard."
