A lecturer at the University of the North West and three other men will appear again in the Mafikeng magistrates' court on August 29 in connection with a botched cash-in-transit heist.

The four men, Michael Mojaki, 42, who worked at the department of sociology at the university, Andrew Mothubatsi, 34, Joseph Mojaki, 38, Itumeleng Makatli, 38, are expected to apply bail at their next appearance.

A fifth man, Senzo Mtjali, 32, died in a shoot out with police.

The robbers were allegedly waiting for a Coin Security van to arrive at a Fruit and Veg City supermarket outside the Crossing Shopping Mall near Mafikeng when police accosted them.

They tried to run away, but police managed to corner them in a cul-de sac where a fierce gun battle ensued.

Mtjali was killed in the shoot-out and the others were wounded.

Later the police received a tip-off from members of the public that some of the gang members were at the university.

Police arrested Mojaki at the university campus. Two suspected stolen cars and clothes belonging to his alleged accomplices were found at his flat.

Mafikeng police spokesman Superintendent Keaobaka Moses said police had been tailing the alleged robbers since the beginning of August.
