The City of Johannesburg has embarked on a major project aimed at turning Nasrec precinct into a major sports, tourism and exhibition hub ahead of the 2010 Fifa World Cup finals.

The upgrading of Nasrec precinct includes Soccer City, the mecca of the beautiful game in South Africa and the place where the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Cup will take place.

This was after the council approved the Nasrec Development Urban Design Framework, a 420ha precinct which also covers the Johannesburg Expo, one of the largest exhibition centres on the continent where the yearly Rand Show takes place.

Others facilities which form part of the precinct include the Crown Mines Golf Course, which is rated by the PGA and designed by the legendary Gary Player, Gold Reef City and Apartheid Museum.
