Sibongile Mazibuko, a respected Johannesburg community leader, has been entrusted with the massive challenge of spearheading the 2010 Fifa Word Cup campaign for the City of Johannesburg.
Mazibuko is in charge of the newly created World Cup department set up by the city, which has 15 full-time staff members.
Prior to her appointment, Mazibuko was employed as the municipality's chief operations officer and served as acting municipal manager.
Part of her job includes visits to the sites of all the World Cup projects in the city like Soccer City, Ellis Park Stadium and Orlando Stadium to assess progress on a regular basis.
A law graduate of the University of Limpopo Turfloop campus, Mazibuko also draws up the funding applications and develops all the strategies for the World Cup for the municipality.
As head of the city's World Cup department, Mazibuko attends the monthly World Cup Host City Forum meetings at Safa House, which are chaired by Sydney Mufamadi, the minister of local government and provincial affairs.
"We are quite happy that the World Cup preparations are going according to plan, we have regular meetings to discuss the progress," said Amos Masondo, executive mayor of Johannesburg.
Mazibuko said despite the fact preparations for the World Cup were giving her sleepless nights, she was confident that Johannesburg will deliver a memorable tournament.
Meanwhile, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza has been appointed chairman of the City of Johannesburg 2010 Fifa World Cup mayoral subcommittee. The committee is also supporting the city's World Cup preparations.
Mayathula-Khoza is in charge of the community development on the committee, which also includes matters relating to sport and recreation.
Others members of the mayoral committee are Parks Tau (finance and economic development), Matshidiso Mfikoe (health), Thomas Phakathi (public safety), Roslynn Greef (infrastructure and services), Prema Naidoo (environment), Ruby Mathang (planning and urban development) and Rehana Moosajee (transport).
