As mentors, teachers are entrusted with the critical role of both nurturing and developing pupils to their full potential so they can fulfil their ambitions.

This is a responsibility that parents and education authorities entrust teachers to carry out with trust and integrity.

But this trust is often betrayed by some teachers who break their professional code by engaging in illicit relationships with pupils - a misdemeanour that mostly goes unreported by principals.

This ought not be the case, and it must stop. The tough example set by the Mpumalanga department of education, which fired a teacher for having sex with a pupil, should be emulated.
