The Mpumalanga government has appointed a team of investigators to probe the causes of the fires that devastated parts of the province.

The Department of Local Government and Housing said the team was expected to submit its findings next month.

Spokesman Simphiwe Kunene, said the fires claimed 13 lives and 27 were people were injured.

Kunene could not give the exact number of livestock killed by the recent fires.

He said the provincial disaster management team was coordinating an assessment of the damage.

"All stakeholders and departments have begun an assessment of the damage in their respective fields," said Kunene.

He said the disaster management team would compile a provincial assessment of the damage from these reports.
