A controversial former teacher in Mpumalanga now faces a charge of stock theft.
Boiki Kenneth Ngobeni, 49, appeared with butchery owner Gift Siwelane, 30, and and Finish Godi, 23, in the Mhala magistrates' court on Friday on charges of stock theft.
They were not asked to plead and were each granted bail of R1000 bail.
Godi could not raise the money and will remain in custody until their trial resumes on September 27.
They allegedly stole a cow belonging to a resident of nearby Hokwe village. Ngobeni allegedly used his licensed firearm to kill it.
Members of the community alerted Superintendent Khazamula Baloyi of Mhala police station. Police found the meat in a refrigerator at a café belonging to Siwelane.
Police said many local people had lost livestock to thieves. Thieves usually sold the meat cheaply at pension paypoints, said Robert Makhubele, Mhala police spokesman.
Ngobeni is also out on R2000 bail on a charge of murdering Thomas Mathebula, a cleaner at a local shopping complex. He is expected to appear in the Nelspruit circuit court with seven others in November.
A group of people allegedly hacked Mathebula to death on the night of August 27 2005 while returning from a drinking spree at Thulamahashe tavern.
One of Ngobeni's co- accused claimed they drained the victim's blood to sell to a sangoma in Gauteng for muti.
