Zimbabwe exodus plan

LUSAKA - The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has developed a contingency plan in anticipation of thousands of Zimbabweans fleeing their country's worsening political and economic situation.

LUSAKA - The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has developed a contingency plan in anticipation of thousands of Zimbabweans fleeing their country's worsening political and economic situation.

UNHCR chief, Antonio Guterres, said yesterday the plan had been made in readiness for any influx of refugees to neighbouring countries.

He said more than three million Zimbabweans had left their country, even though only a limited number had applied for asylum in those countries.

"Many Zimbabweans are in need of humanitarian assistance, even though they have not asked for asylum," said Guterres, who is in Zambia to assess the refugee situation.
