BANGKOK - Leigh Julius, top Port Elizabeth sprinter, is on his way back to South Africa to recharge his batteries before going to Japan for the World Athletics Championships.
Julius, a human movement studies student at the Nelson Mandela Bay University, is returning from the 24th World Student Games being held in Bangkok where he won two silver medals from the 4 x 100m relay team and 200m sprint.
Besides Julius, the other members of the relay team were Hannes Dreyer, Hennie Kotze, Snyman Prinsloo and Petrus Koekemoer. Koekemoer went on to win the 400m hurdles gold two days later.
In the 200m final event, Julius would have made history if he had won a gold medal. That would have made him the first runner to win three consecutive gold medals in the history of the Federation of International University Sports (Fisu). Fisu is the world governing sports body where Limpopo medical doctor Malumbete Ralethe, who is also on the board of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, is a senior executive committee member.
