Stunning start to PSL season

A typical curtain raiser, the midweek's full Premier Soccer League programme produced one result that sent shock waves around the soccer fraternity.

This when unfancied AmaZulu - who only remained in top-flight football through the dreaded playoffs - defeated defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 at Loftus.

No one had given Usuthu a chance, especially after Sundowns went berserk in their preceding fixture, routing Bloemfontein Celtic 4-1.

In another upset result, Moroka Swallows proved once again that they have Orlando Pirates' number when they pipped them 1-0 at Ellis Park, a result that did not go down well with "The Ghost", who vented their anger on coach Bibey Mutombo.

The full midweek results were:

Benoni Premier Utd 0, Kaizer Chiefs 2;

Orlando Pirates 0, Moroka Swallows 1;

Mamelodi Sundowns 1, AmaZulu 2;

Santos 2, Free State Stars 2;

Black Leopards 2, SuperSport United 0;

Lamontville Golden Arrows 0, Platinum Stars 1;

Celtic 1, Ajax Cape Town 0; and

Jomo Cosmos 0, Bidvest Wits 0.
