Schoolboy in freak death

A Blairgowrie Primary School pupil died after a metal balustrade fell on top of him yesterday.

A Blairgowrie Primary School pupil died after a metal balustrade fell on top of him yesterday.

Johannesburg police spokesman Superintendent Eugene Opperman said the eight-year-old Grade 2 pupil died on the scene after the accident around 10am.

Netcare 911 spokesman Mark Stokoe said school staff lifted the heavy structure off the boy and took him to the sick bay where two teachers immediately administered emergency resuscitation.

"Everything possible was done to try and revive the little boy, but his injuries were too severe and there was nothing that could be done to save him," said Stokoe.

Arriving medical crew and life support paramedics also tried to save him, but the boy died.

He had been playing with other children, under supervision, when a heavy section of the balustrade leaning against a wall fell on him.

The balustrade had been removed from a nearby braai area at the school and it was not yet clear how it fell on the boy.

Gauteng education department counsellors, school psychologists and Netcare 911 counsellors went to the school to provide support and to arrange for some of the shocked children to be taken home.

"The parents are extremely distressed," said Stokoe. - Sapa
