The Department of Home Affairs is to investigate how an Ekurhuleni woman was fraudulently married.
Busisiwe Khoza, 25, of Vosloorus, went to the department's Boksburg offices to change her surname, only to be told she had married a man known as Mohammed at the Alberton office last year.
Spokesman Manantshele Tau confirmed yesterday that the department would get to the bottom of the matter.
Khoza said she had gone to the Boksburg offices to attend to a matter relating to her wedding after her fiance had paid ilibolo for her.
She said she was using her mother's maiden surname and wanted to change it to her father's surname of Tyonki when she discovered she was "married".
Tau said that after Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula introduced the "Check Your Marriage Status" campaign a few years ago, complaints about bogus marriages had dropped.
He said Mapisa-Nqakula had encouraged young women especially to check their marriage status and had introduced a website in that regard.
"The campaign is successful and we do manage to resolve the problems," said Tau.
