Two of the 18 schoolchildren who were flung out of their school transport on Tuesday were still being treated at Pretoria Academic Hospital yesterday.
One the pupils, Jabulile Nhlabathi, 13, was discharged from the hospital yesterday. The other 15 were treated and discharged after the accident on Tuesday.
Jabulile sustained cuts to her head when she rolled down an embankment near the N4/N1 interchange in Pretoria.
She and other pupils from Laerskool Oost-Eind, Sunnyside Primary School, Eendracht and Dansa College were injured when the bakkie in which they were travelling overturned.
Her father, Isaac Malaza, yesterday described the accident as horrific.
He said he would be very careful in future when choosing transport for his child.
"I will make sure that her transport is roadworthy and that the driver is a qualified professional. I am not going to gamble with my child's life anymore and a bakkie is not an option," he said.
Jabulile told Sowetan : "I don't want to see that bakkie again.
"I miss my friends and school. I don't want to talk about the accident because it makes me upset. The doctor said I will be okay," she said.
Meanwhile in another accident in KwaZulu-Natal, a woman was killed when a bakkie in which she and 22 other people were travelling overturned.
The spiokesman for the KwaaZulu-Natal department of transport, Colin Msibi, said yesterday that the number of accidents in the province involving bakkies was a concern, but there were regulations in place for transporting schoolchildren in bakkies.
"If a bakkie is used to transport schoolchildren, the driver should have a permit to do so."
He said there was no law on the number of people that had to be transported on a bakkie.
"In future we will have to look into that," Msibi said.
