The newly appointed head of the KwaZulu-Natal department of agriculture and environmental affairs, Advocate Modidimo Mannya, has vowed to deal harshly with officials in his department who "play cheap politics at the expense of the poor".

Mannya was responding to reports that officials at Port Shepstone had halted poverty alleviation projects initiated by late MEC Dumisani Makhaye in 2004.

It is alleged that some officials aligned to the IFP refused to implement the projects because they were initiated by an ANC MEC. Mannya said an immediate investigation had been launched and heads would roll.

"I will be having a meeting with those officials in question soon. I need them to give me an explanation."

He said he would not " tolerate the behaviour of those" who used politics at the expense of the poor and that they would be dealt with.
