Metro police officers on Tuesday pounced on unsuspecting hawkers and arrested 40 of them for breaking municipal by-laws.

Travelling in a 10-car convoy, they started their raid at Maraisburg Road near Bosmont and continued to William Nicol Road near Fourways.

All those who were arrested were men, including newspaper vendors at intersections and off-ramps.

Metro police spokesman Wayne Minnaar said: "We arrested the hawkers because we were enforcing by-laws. Hawkers disrupt traffic at intersections and off-ramps, leading to motorists being robbed of their belongings.

"People also get hijacked at these places by criminals pretending to be hawkers," added Minnaar.
