A big turnout is expected at Central Gauteng Athletics' provincial cross-country championships scheduled for the Westonaria Sports Complex in Mogale City tomorrow, starting from 9am.

Steven Khanyile, chairman of the CGA cross- country, said they were anticipating a good attendance because this would be the last event for the CGA calendar.

Most of the runners will use the competition as their final preparations ahead of the South African Cross-Country Championships billed for Witbank in Mpumalanga on September 8.

"We are inviting all neighbouring schools and aspirant athletes to come in large numbers to compete in the championships,'' said Khanyile.

Top runners such as Themba Miya from New Balance Athletics Club and Harmony's duo of Mbongeni Ngxazozo and Frik Guya, will fight it out for glory in the senior men's section.

New Balance Wanderers' Phalula twins, Lebo and Lebogang, are likely to face stiff competition from the up and coming Portia Ngwenya in the 800m and the 1 500m.

l Athletics Vaal Triangle will stage their cross-country championships at Kollege Park School, next to the Vaal University of Technology, at 10am.
