The yearly Safa-Metropolitan tournament kicks off this weekend and youngsters of all ages throughout the land will for the first time get a chance to display their talent.

The tournament was won by Bright Stars - a team from KwaZulu-Natal - in its inaugural year in 2005, who were then dethroned by Motherwell's Showville United Brothers in Port Elizabeth last year.

This year, a new format has been introduced, and according to Nathi Chonco, group executive at Metropolitan, the tournament is now open for all ages.

"We are delighted to be able to support young, talented players of all ages to play against other skilled teams and display their talent, skills and passion for the game," Chonco said.

The winners will be promoted to the regional league, the SAB Regional League and players stand a good chance of being selected to the national Under-20 team, and earn a Metropolitan sponsorship.

"We have registered more than 6 000 clubs from all our 317 local football associations, and more than 140 000 players are expected to battle it out in the season for promotion and to make the Under-20 team next year," said Safa's director of competitions Selokela Masetle.
