Police Superintendent Louis Jacobs said yesterday the man was shot in the shoulder and chest on Tuesday afternoon, about 3km outside Potchefstroom.
A motorist told police that he had been driving on the road to Carletonville when he noticed a truck parked at the side of the road.
As he was driving past, a white Toyota Corolla behind the truck did a U-turn in front of his car, almost colliding with his vehicle.
The motorist followed the car to note its registration number as he wanted to lay a charge of reckless driving, Jacobs said. There were the five men inside the car.
When he could not catch up, he turned around and drove back to where the truck was parked.
At the truck, he saw another motorist trying to remove the truck driver's body from the road.
The man was still alive when paramedics arrived, but died while being treated on the scene.
"All indications are that he was shot while inside the truck as traces of blood were found inside," said Jacobs. - Sapa
