Benni out of Uefa Cup tie

Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy has been ruled out of today's Uefa Cup tie against Finnish side MyPa.

Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy has been ruled out of today's Uefa Cup tie against Finnish side MyPa.

The South African suffered concussion in the win at Middlesbrough at the weekend, where he collapsed on the pitch.

McCarthy, 29, will stay behind when the team travel to Finland and manager Mark Hughes said: "Benni has been checked over again and is okay.

"But he got a bang on the temple, which shook him up, and the MyPa game has come too soon for him."

McCarthy collapsed after clashing heads with two Boro defenders and was taken to hospital before being released to travel with the team.

Rovers doctor Phil Batty carried out a routine examination of McCarthy on Monday.

McCarthy was Blackburn's leading scorer in his debut season in the Premier League, finding the net 24 times last term.

l Former England captain David Beckham says he hopes to be fit for next week's international friendly against Germany.

Beckham has been struggling with an ankle problem but said if he comes through two games for his club, LA Galaxy, this week, then he will join up with the rest of the squad for the game on August 22.

Beckham has played just 17 minutes for his new club so far, but the 32-year-old midfielder trained properly with his teammates for the first time on Tuesday and was set to play a part for them against DC United yesterday and against New York on Saturday.

"It feels stable enough to actually play in a game and see how far I can take it," Beckham said. - BBC and Sapa-dpa
