Theatre plan for Soweto

The development of an international indoor swimming pool and a theatre are some of the 2010 Fifa World Cup legacy projects in the pipeline for residents of Soweto by the City of Johannesburg.

The development of an international indoor swimming pool and a theatre are some of the 2010 Fifa World Cup legacy projects in the pipeline for residents of Soweto by the City of Johannesburg.

Amos Masondo, executive mayor of Johannesburg, said they had embarked on developing projects in the south of the city to address the inequalities created by apartheid.

"The theatre will be of a world- class standard. If we had a proper theatre in Soweto, we would have asked the producers of The Lion King that it must also take place in the township.

"We have talent in abundance in swimming and acting. The availability of such facilities will create more opportunities for the residents of Soweto to excel in sports and entertainment.

"There is a task team that will be going to Canada soon on a fact-finding mission in relation to the two projects because we don't want them to become white elephants post-2010.

"The structures of the two projects are still being designed by the experts that we have employed," said Masondo.

He also announced that they would be introducing the Street Furniture Project, which is aimed at encouraging residents to sit on benches in the streets with relatives and friends.

"There are more than 1000 swivel bins which have already been placed in the inner city. This project, which we are using to improve the inner city, will be intensified in the financial year."

Masondo added that the designs for the Klipspruit River Development, which will start in New Canada, have been completed and construction was scheduled to start in the 2007/2009 financial year.

"It will also be part of the greening campaign where we will plant 200000 trees in the south of the city. We are also upgrading Diepkloof Hostel."
