BANGKOK - Young and gifted Sharpeville middle distance runner Stephen Mokoka grabbed a bronze medal at the 24th World Student Games last night after finishing third in the men's 10 000m final event.
"Winning a medal at an international competition is a great achievement that I will always cherish for the rest of my life," said Mokoka, a sports management student at the Vaal University of Technology.
"I have worked so hard for this medal, the plan is to represent South Africa at the Olympics in the 10 000m because we do not have not had athletes in that event for almost five years at international level."
The 22-year-old Mokoka, who is also the South African Student Sports Union (Sassu) 10 000m and 12km cross-country national champion, clocked 30 minutes and 03 seconds.
Team South Africa have won four medals, all of them in athletics. The other medallists were Petrus Koekemoer (gold, 400m hurdles), Leigh Julius (silver) and the men's 4 x 100m relay team.
Meanwhile, Team South Africa soccer side are out to make it two in a row against Asian countries when they take on Japan during the 24th World Student Games at Thammasat University Sports Complex today.
This was after South Africa beat Chinese Taipei 3-2 to register their first win of the tournament after four matches. Striker Amanda Dlamini was the toast of Mzansi after scoring the three goals. Japan beat Thailand 5-4 on penalties on Monday.
"Our aim is to finish the tournament ninth overall, we are going to fight to the bitter end for a win against Japan. We just have to guard against complacency," said Queen Moloko, the soccer team's manager.
In basketball, the South African men's team - who are still to win a match to date - were hammered 89-50 by the more experienced Chinese Taipei yesterday.
Still in basketball, Mozambique women's team easily defeated Korea 58-42.
