Committee will honour Biko on stage

Several artists, business people, authors and musicians have formed a group that will be known as the Steve Biko 30th Anniversary Reference Committee.

The committee will also stage celebratory and commemorative events under the Biko 30:30 theme.

The committee comprises Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, Jabu Mabuza, Maishe Maponya, Don Mattera, Palesa Rachidi, Sello Rasethaba, Raks Seakhoa, Letepe Maisela, Duma Ndlovu, Sandile Ngidi, Khehla Mthembu, Bokwe Mafuna, Barney Mokgatle and Lybon Mabasa.

The planned events will include the re-enactment of Biko's arrest, torture and eventual death at the hands of the former security police on September 12 1977, aged 30 (hence the 30:30 tag).

A special opera presentation, to be known as Opera Biko, and a jazz show dedication out of the yearly Joy of Jazz series will be presented.

There will also be a creative, literary, public participation project to be known as The People Shall Speak.

"The re-enactment, tagged The Cell Road Map and Other Activities, is due to be staged between Saturday (August 19) and September 12.

The Joy of Jazz-linked commemorative jazz showcase will be staged between August 23 and 24.

Opera Biko and The People Shall Speak will run between October 17 and 20.
