Civil servants and the public in general must understand the role of governance and accountability. To ensure accountability of public funds, powers are delegated to officials to check the abuse of state assets.

Our government strengthened controls in MP's travel expenditure and the president's signature checks any abuse.

It is, therefore, very worrying that the opposition, alliance and community structures have questioned the president's decision to fire officials who transgress laws.

Madlala-Routledge didn't do South Africans any favours by being vocal about HIV-Aids and conditions in hospitals. It was part of her mandate and job description.

The fact that she endlessly fought to improve the lives of our people is no justification for overriding these controls.

If we want to uproot abuse of state assets, we should equally avoid favouritism.
