A Sunday school teacher has been arrested for the alleged rape of 19 children.

The suspect from Secunda, Mpumalanga, was arrested on July 31 .

The 34-year-old Sunday school teacher appeared in the Evander magistrates' court yesterday.

His case was postponed to September 3 for further investigation.

The ages of his victims range between four and 12 years.

Four of the victims were reported to be boys he picked up on the streets of the township.

The rest were girls, all under age, he taught at Sunday school.

The suspect was arrested after a 10-year-old girl told the priest's wife what had occurred.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the priest's wife was driving children home after classes and was surprised to see the teacher alighting from a car with one of the girls.

The next day she called the 10-year-old girl and asked her why the teacher had been with her.

The girl replied that she was going to play amahashi, or horse riding, with the teacher.

During their alleged play, they would undress and then the teacher would lie on his back with the child climbing on top of him.

The priest's wife then reported the matter to the police.

The next day she accompanied the suspect to the police station where he allegedly confessed to having raped the girls from the Sunday school as well as four boys he had met on the streets.

Khoabane said seven statements had been collected from alleged victims.

But Khoabane said that it would take further time to trace the other victims because their families had left the area.

He said some of the parents were not aware of what had happened to their children or about the teacher's arrest.

Khoabane said police found children's clothes, including underwear, during a search of the church premises.
