'Sacked deputy lied about visit'

Eastern Cape health MEC Nomsa Jajula yesterday accused sacked Deputy Health Minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge of lying.

Eastern Cape health MEC Nomsa Jajula yesterday accused sacked Deputy Health Minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge of lying.

"I want to place it on record that the ex-deputy minister of health Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge visited Frere Hospital without informing me as the MEC of health in the Eastern Cape.

"Statements by her claiming she had informed me of the visit and its purpose are absolute lies," said Jajula.

Madlala-Routledge, right, paid an unannounced visit to Frere Hospital in East London on July 13.

She said last week that before her surprise visit she had informed Jajula of her concerns about conditions at the hospital.

"On the day of my visit to Frere Jajula could not join me because of the short notice. But she sent the acting head of her department to tour the hospital with me," Madlala- Routledge said on Friday.

Madlala-Routledge reportedly "went to ground" at the weekend and is giving no further media interviews, according to her adviser Sukhthi Naidoo. - Sapa
