Hail Shona McTaggart the saviour. She saved Boxing South Africa from a fiasco in front of Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile in Durban at the weekend.

The tournament coordinator for Golden Gloves came to the aid of Dali Mpofu, Bongani Khumalo and Peter Ngatane.

They had failed to convince Marcel de Croche, an Argentinian boxing agent, to allow his three female fighters to do what comes naturally.

De Croche and promoters Mbali Zantsi and Kenosi Mlabateki entered into an agreement last week that his fighters would be paid in dollars before their fights.

BSA failed to deliver. Jos Steyn, who handles BSA's finances He was alleged to have knocked off early last Friday to sort out the monies and nothing came forth.

It only came into light that something was wrong just before 10pm, the scheduled time for a live broadcast. The first bout between a Brazilian and a local fighter did not take place as scheduled.

Instead the local shootout between Sandra Leigh Almedia and Bomikazi Klass took place, but it ended before it could even start. Almeida pummelled Klass into submission in 28 seconds.

Zantsi, Mlabateki, Mpofu, Ngatane and Khumalo then rushed to the dressing rooms to negotiate with De Croche. That took almost two hours.

It was then that Gugu Nyembe, an employee at BSA, phoned MacTaggart, who needed less than five minutes to convince De Croche.

The latter has been working with Golden Gloves, bringing fighters here, for 13 years. But his three fighters were soundly beaten.

This fiasco reflected badly on Khumalo, who has just taken over as BSA's CEO.
