Women and human rights organisations in KwaZulu- Natal have expressed outrage over the continuing domestic violence in the province after a family killing.
They are calling for more interventions to eradicate domestic violence.
The call was made after a 50-year-old man, Bafana Makhathini of Mvundleni area in Pietermaritzburg, shot dead his wife Duduzile, 46, and stepdaughter, Zandile, 25, before turning the gun on himself at the weekend.
Cookie Edwards, of the KwaZulu-Natal Network on Violence Against Women, condemned the incident.
"It is such a sad thing to happen, especially during this month when organisations around the country are highlighting women abuse," Edwards said.
Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said police were still investigating the deaths.
"We received a report of a shooting in the Mvundleni area.
"On arrival in the area, police were met by local resident Agrippa Zuma who told them he had received a telephone call from Makhathini.
"Zuma said Makhathini claimed he was being attacked by his wife and stepdaughter," said Budhram.
Zuma had gone to Makhathini's home and when he arrived, he heard gunshots.
Zuma took the police to Makhathini's home .
"When the police arrived at the Makhathini home, they forced the door open.
"They discovered the bodies of Makhathini, his wife and stepdaughter.
"They all had gunshot wounds to the head.
"Our initial investigations suggest the motive for the killings was domestic violence," Budhram said.
