For the second week running, the Govan Mbeki Municipality in Mpumalanga will be without a leader following the mayor's failure to secure bail on Friday.
Sipho Nkosi appeared in the Evander magistrates' court over his alleged involvement in the murder of his deputy, Thandi Mtsweni, at her home on June 27. He was arrested inside the courtroom shortly after the alleged mastermind of the murder, Sibongile "Sdudla" Lukhele, a local businesswoman, implicated him during her bail application last Tuesday.
Lukhele claimed in a confession before a magistrate that Nkosi had paid R30000 for the murder of Mtsweni.
At the time, Mtsweni was reportedly investigating allegations of corruption in the issuing of tenders.
Nkosi failed to convince the court to hear his bail application on Friday. As a result, it was postponed to Friday this week.
His lawyer, Marcia Strydom, who had applied for access to certain information from the police docket, did not succeed as the docket was not in court.
Magistrate Daan Senekal also gave the defence the opportunity to apply for bail in the high court before Nkosi's next appearance.
Meanwhile, the executive mayor of the Gert Steyn District Municipality, Andria Gamede, under whose jurisdiction the Govan Mbeki Municipality falls, said yesterday that no decision had been made as yet to appoint an acting mayor.
