BANGKOK - The South African women's student soccer national team should play more international games ahead of the 2008 Federation of African University Sports (Fasu) Games in Kampala, Uganda if they are serious about making an impact globally, said coach Jerry Laka at the weekend.
Laka was speaking to Sowetan after the inexperienced Team South Africa soccer side fared dismally at the 24th World Student Games where they lost all their three first round games in the past six days.
In their opening game, South Africa were defeated 3-1 by Canada on Tuesday. They went on to lose 2-0 to China on Thursday night and completed their disappointing group stages campaign with a 6-2 drubbing by debuntantes Great Britain on Saturday.
After failing to qualify for the quarterfinals, South Africa will now feature in the 16-nation tournament ranking matches, starting today.
The draw for position nine and 10 ranking matches was expected to be done last night.
Laka, who works at the department of sports at the University of Cape Town, said: "It was clear that international exposure was lacking from our girls."
