Andre Meyerowitz, senior assistant editor at the Pretoria News, died on Tuesday following surgery, the newspaper reported.

Zingisa Mkhuma, acting editor of the Pretoria News, said Meyerowitz's death was a huge loss.

"He was a huge asset; he had many years of experience which came through in the paper daily," she said.

In an obituary prepared for publication, the newspaper said 62-year-old Meyerowitz had been a former parliamentary and foreign correspondent and was serving as night editor at the time of his death.

Friends and colleagues who had worked closely with him at the Pretoria News for many years were shocked to hear of his death.

Independent Newspapers' executive director of operations Nazeem Howa said it was "a very sad day" for everyone at the Pretoria News and Independent Newspaper group.

"Andre was a valued member of our staff who played a critical role in ensuring our market-leading position in Pretoria," he said. - Sapa
