The Young Communist League wants the state to provide free sanitary pads to all poor women.

The league yesterday said the provision of free pads would ease the burden of poor women who cannot afford sanitary pads.

The league's spokesman, Castro Ngobese, said: "This will also assist in minimising infections that might be encountered by women through the use of cloths."

He said the state had the resources to provide sanitary pads for free and make them available in community centres, schools, post offices, public clinics and hospitals.

Health Department spokesman Sibani Mngadi said the government provided women in maternity wards with free pads after they had given birth.

"We need to look at the free services the government offers women and the poor in general. I am not sure at this stage whether the government will be able to offer pads for free or not," Mngadi said.
