In his brief life, Stephen Bantu Biko made a tremendous contribution not only to the political freedom of South Africa, but also to the mental liberation of black people worldwide.

This is the bold declaration that was made in Johannesburg in May this year by Nkosinathi Biko, chief executive of the Steve Biko Foundation and son of the Black Consciousness movement icon and community development activist.

Nkosinathi said this at the launch of a series of cele-bratory and commemorative events this year marking the 30th anniversary of Steve Biko's gruesome death at the hands of apartheid police, when aged only 30, on September 12 1977.

The celebratory and commemorative campaign, titled the Biko 30:30 - which also features other related events organised by a concerned collective known as the Steve Biko 30th Anniversary Reference Committee - includes art, literature, film and musical festivals and will culminate in a conference entitled Consciousness, Agency & the African Development Agenda, in Cape Town next month.

Forthcoming events - to be held at various venues in Gauteng and Western Cape - include a related African Leadership Conference, entitled Consciousness, Agency & the African Development Agenda; a former heads of state dinner, a Steve Biko Memorial Lecture and several international benefit concerts.

l Sowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation are the media and organising partners of these events.
