Angry squatters at Thulamtwana informal settlement in the Vaal attacked their leaders this week after they accused them of stalling development in the area.

Daniel Jase, chairman of the area's community forum, and Samuel Mhlengi, also a member of the forum, sustained head injuries after they were pelted with stones on Wednesday.

Both escaped by locking themselves in the forum's offices which were also later destroyed during the attack.

Jase said the attack happened after members of the community called them to a meeting to account for the failure of the promised start of construction work in the area.

"We were attacked when we showed up for the meeting," Jase said.

Police spokesman Captain Veli Mcera yesterday said three men were arrested in connection with the attack.
