Three of the ten dangerous criminals who escaped from the maximum security Qalaka- busha Prison in Empangeni, northern KwaZulu-Natal, at the weekend were rearrested yesterday.

They prisoners are Mandlendoda Mbuyazi, Thobani Sibiya and Nkosinathi Mdluli.

Mbuyazi and Sibiya were serving life sentences for murder while Mdluli was facing two years for escaping from lawful custody.

The other seven prisoners are serial escaper Sibusiso Mzimela, Mzo Khanyile, Muzi Skosana, Nhlanhla Ngobese, Sipho Buthelezi, Phiwinhlanhla Mbatha and Chonco Mkhwanazi.

Mzimela, 31, has previously escaped from prison five times. He was arrested last year for a cash-in-transit robbery.

Spokesman Phindile Hadebe said the police had offered a reward of R20000 a prisoner for information that would lead to their rearrest.

The prisoners escaped on Saturday afternoon.

"We appeal to the public for any information that might assist the police in rearresting the other prisoners," she said.

A provincial task team, led by detectives of the organised crime unit, has been set up to investigate the daring break out from Qalakabusha.
