Police have opened a criminal case against a police officer after Sowetan exposed him for taking bribes from the public at the Wynberg magistrates' court last week.

Last week, Sowetan paid R10 to gain entry to the cells and see Stephina Phele, 18, accused of kidnapping Lesley Mhlanga. She has since been sent for mental evaluation at Sterkfontein Mental Hospital.

Alexandra police station commissioner Director Theko Pharasi said an internal investigation was continuing and confirmed that criminal charges would be laid.

"The officer will be suspended," Pharasi said.
