Young communists want judge president to resign

The Young Communist League in KwaZulu-Natal has called for the immediate resignation of the province's judge president, Vuka Tshabalala.

Speaking after its executive meeting in Durban at the weekend, the league said it believed that Tshabalala's public admission that he accepted shares from leading businessman and presidential hopeful, Tokyo Sexwale, compromised his independence.

Sexwale admitted that he was being lobbied to stand for the ANC's and, by extension, the country's presidency. This is seen by the young communists and other Zuma supporters as a direct challenge to the ANC deputy president.

The league said Tshabalala, in his capacity as judge president, had powers to appoint the judge who would preside should Zuma's corruption case go back to court.

This, they claimed, was a clear conflict of interest.

Khaye Nkwanyana, the league's provincial secretary, said yesterday they had "lost hope and trust" in Tshabalala and were "surprised that, since he had publicly admitted to having accepted shares from Sexwale, no steps had been taken against him by Judicial Services Commission".

"We call on him to do the honorable thing and resign because he has compromised himself," he said.
