An Mpumalanga woman refused to die after her husband allegedly sprayed her with a hail of bullets before throwing her out of a moving vehicle at the weekend.

Maki Madileng, 40, is today fighting for her life at a Pretoria private hospital.

And her husband, a prominent businessman, is on the run though police said the net was about to close in on him.

Inspector Veli Semenya said Solly Madileng, from Marapyane, near KwaMhlanga, was apparently angered by his wife's decision to end the marriage which had been on the rocks for some time.

He said the suspect went to visit his wife who was staying at her parents' house after moving out of the marital home.

"He said he wanted to mend their marriage because he could not live without her," Semenya said.

The two left in a car and as they were driving an argument ensued during which the husband allegedly took out his gun and shot his wife randomly.

Semenya said Madileng was lucky to survive the shooting.

"After shooting her seven times on Saturday night, he left her lying unconscious on the side of the road for the night."

A cattle-herder discovered her body.

Kgomotso Mogoro, Madileng's sister, said they warned her on many occasions to divorce her "abusive husband".

"He used to beat her up almost every weekend but she still continued to stay with him.

"She said she loved him and that he would change one day. Now look at what the love did to her," Mogoro said.

Carrie Shelver, spokesman for People Opposing Women Abuse, said: "This awful incident flies in the face of Women's Month and we are optimistic that the suspect will be brought to book soon."

Shelver advised the victim's family to contact them for counselling and legal advice.
