With the world plagued by serious natural disasters and devastating wars, it is a little baffling that KwaZulu-Natal is embroiled in a pants war.

There are men who feel that their culture is being undermined by women who wear trousers. They say that trousers are men's apparel.

They claim women who wear them in public disrespect themselves and the men in their community.

Some women have been molested, stripped and paraded in public and threatened for not adhering to "traditionalist" notions of propriety. Other women have been beaten up and their homes burnt to the ground.

A meeting at Seventeen Men's Hostel in Umlazi last week called to stop the abuse ended in deadlock.

The aggressive cultural imperialists refused to budge on their beliefs and their minds were closed to reason.

It is embarrassing that while the rest of the world is battling with floods, fires and hunger, KwaZulu-Natal is hot under the collar over trivia.

It is a mystery why Africans can still be obsessed with prescribing dress codes for women when there are pressing issues crying out for attention such as poverty and the Aids pandemic.

This is women's month. The least these bullies can do is mind their own business and let the women get on with their lives.
