Nine security guards were seriously injured in a cash-in-transit heist on the N12 highway yesterday.

The incident occurred at about 8.30am when a BMW rammed into a Coin security van which was being escorted by a security vehicle.

East Rand police spokesman Captain Jethro Mtshali said that an unknown number of gunmen climbed out of a BMW, a Mazda, a Colt bakkie and a Toyota and opened fire at the two security vehicles.

The driver of the Coin vehicle was wounded in the neck.

Mtshali said it was not yet known which hospital the guards were taken to.

"Two cars, a [Toyota] Run-X and the Mazda were found abandoned along a road in Elandsfontein. No arrests have been made yet and investigations will continue," he said.
