All that Ben Kubhayi, 18, wanted was to play pleasant music at a neighbour's wedding. Instead he died because of his taste.
Kubhayi's family said yesterday that he had been very generous and had decided to lend their neighbours his speakers and CDs for their wedding, which was to take place on Sunday (yesterday).
He had also offered to be the DJ during the reception.
Kubhayi, of GaMaja village near Lebowakgomo in Limpopo, had gone to the neighbour's house on Saturday night to help with preparations.
His aunt Christina Kubhayi said a quarrel had started when a local youth demanded that music to his liking be played.
"I don't know music, so cannot even say what Ben was playing. But the other youth did not like it and insisted that the music should be changed," she said.
She said the argument started at about 3am on Sunday.
The two then went outside where the quarrel continued.
They had a fist fight and then the other boy allegedly pulled out a screwdriver and stabbed Kubhayi once in the chest.
He died a few minutes later of what is believed to be a result of internal bleeding.
Police spokesman Captain Mamphaswa Seabi said yesterday the 16-year-old suspect was arrested after an intensive search.
"We have arrested the suspect in connection with the incident of a stabbing to death of an 18-year-old man and have charged him with murder."
The suspect is expected to appear in the Lebowakgomo magistrates' court today," said Seabi.
The victim's mother, Margaret Kubhayi, was too traumatised to speak to Sowetan yesterday.
Her sister, Christina Kubhayi, said it was difficult to believe that their son died for his generosity.
"Ben had taken the speaker and some of his CDs to go and play some music during the build-up to the wedding day.
"We did not expect him to die like this, especially at the hands of people we thought would protect him," said the devastated aunt.
