The South African National Editors' Forum has welcomed the dismissal of an interdict which prevented the Mail & Guardian from publishing a damning report about alleged corruption, abuse of power and intimidation by a senior official at the SABC.

The interim interdict, which twice prevented the paper from publishing Mafika Sihlali's name, or allegations made against him in an SABC internal audit report, was imposed on July 20.

The interdict was dismissed with costs on Wednesday by Judge Ferdi Preller, who said newspapers had a duty to disseminate news on allegations of corruption in public entities.

When the interdict was imposed, the newspaper was forced, at considerable cost, to withdraw copies that had already been distributed and alter them before they could go on sale. - Sapa.
