Netball veteran Hazel "Makwaitos" Gumede of Soweto has been inducted into the Gsport Hall of Fame at a launch held in Westcliff on Wednesday.
Gumede, who retired from netball in 1997, has been lauded for her brilliance and unwavering support for netball in South Africa.
She received her cut-crystal award from the inaugural Hall of Fame inductee, Penny Heyns.
"I feel honoured. I used to think it's something that happens to other people. I never thought it would come to me one day,'' said the soft-spoken Gumede.
She is still active in netball, assisting enthusiasts to reach their potential on the netball court. Gumede is head coach of the Gauteng Netball Academy and assistant coach of the Spar Proteas team.
Gsport editor Kass Naidoo paid tribute to Gumede, saying she is an inspiration to all women.
"Women's sport is richer because of people like Hazel. Choosing her was an honour in itself," said Naidoo.
Banyana Banyana's captain, Portia Modise, won the star of the year award because of her immeasurable contribution to football.
At the same function South Africa's top women's golf coach, Lesley Copeman, walked away with the woman of the year award. Melinda Lombard, a pioneer in women's sports broadcasting, won the woman in media award.
Vanya Mangaliso, co-owner of top fashion label Sun Goddess, won the style star of the year award. Gsport aims to raise the profile of South African women in sport.
