Durban Stars' caretaker coach Lindani Shezi believes his young squad will raise the standard of soccer in KwaZulu-Natal.
He said this will be done by challenging for top honours in the National First Division (NFD) in the 2007-08 Mvela Golden League season that starts this month.
Shezi was appointed stand-in coach after the departure of Brazilian coach Walter da Silva and Burundian mentor Ramadahn Nsazwurwino at the end of last season.
Shezi said their pre-season training is going according to plan despite the fact that they have a new, young squad which lacks experience.
He was happy with the fighting spirit they showed in their last two friendly games against Maritzburg City and PSL outfit AmaZulu.
Stars drew 2-2 with Maritzburg and lost 3-1 to AmaZulu recently.
"Our preparations for the coming season are right on track and our boys are ready for the challenge ahead.
"Our objective is to play in the elite league in years to come. This term we are pushing to qualify for the Mvela Platinum playoffs at the end of the season. We lost many players but we are happy that we managed to maintain half of the squad we had last season.
"Stars have a talented pool of players who are hungry for success, which makes them an easy side to coach," the former Royal Coastal coach said.
Stars have lost a number of quality players including their top striker Sithembiso Ngcobo, who joined Free State Stars.
Marvin Oakes joined Santos, Siyabonga Mngoma moved to Benoni Premier United, while Musa Sishi and Sibusiso Sithole are training with Free State Stars. - Sapa
