Most people enter the world of business and technology for financial ambition, but newly appointed Gijima AST chief executive officer Jonas Bogoshi tells a different story about his entry into big business.
"My being in IT was by pure chance. I went to the University of Cape Town to study mathematics, and I fell in love with computer science," he says.
Bogoshi was born in 1966 and grew up in the town of Mabopane where he nurtured his love for academia and science.
"I was never really the type to play sports. I played a little bit of baseball, but my real love has always been mathematics, even when I was young," Bogoshi says.
"Today I'm pretty much the same. I have quiet weekends, and play golf once in a while."
In 1989 Bogoshi graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and mathematics with aspirations of becoming a software developer.
Bogoshi secured a job at IBM in 1991. He started off as a systems engineer but quickly moved into sales.
From 1993 to 1994 he worked as a field manager for Shell South Africa, but be returned to IBM where he stayed until 1997.
After a successful stay at the multinational, Bogoshi spent seven years at Cisco Systems where he shifted positions four times.
For the past three years, Bogo-shi has been away from the corporate environment working for the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), but he feels that he is still in touch with the corporate world.
"I think I have an even more unique offering because of the contacts that I've made in government," says Bogoshi.
"We can build Gijima into South Africa's leading ICT company. At SITA I was a customer of the IT industry, but now I get to be on the other side again," he adds.
