It is always gratifying when good work is recognised, acknowledged or rewarded.
Such a token of appreciation went to four teachers and 36 pupils recently.
The pupils showed a marked improvement in maths and physical science in an Engen-sponsored teacher and pupil education and training project.
So they and their teachers were rewarded with an eventful, educational and entertaining trip to Durban.
Khanyisa Balfour, Engen's corporate social investment manager, said the two-day excursion formed part of the company's "Do You Have What It Takes?" campaign.
It was launched in March at Engen's maths and science incubator schools in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.
The campaign exposes pupils to careers in science, engineering and commerce so that they are able to make suitable career choices.
Balfour said the teachers and pupils were judged by tutors and management of Star Schools, a service provider for the incubator schools. They looked for:
l Improvement in pupils' progress between their first assessment and the June results;
l Attitude in pupils' commitment to the programme, attendance and support for fellow pupils at participating schools.
The group was taken on a tour of the Engen Refinery, a tour of its lubricants blending plant, a visit to a top science centre, a visit to Ushaka Marine World, a visit to and an interview at a Durban radio station, and attended an awards dinner.
Sowetan, together with the Telkom Foundation and the Education Department, organises and sponsors the yearly Aggrey Klaaste Mathematics, Science and Technology Educator of the Year Awards. It honours and nurtures practising and retired maths, science and technology teachers.
