The majority party, they claim, had reduced their speaking time in the council.

In a democracy like ours, minority voices are crucial. Gagging dissenters has become a common feature in Africa. It raises eyebrows when this habit creeps into our midst because South Africa has one of the best models of democracy in the world.

If the move to reduce opposition speaking time in the Johannesburg council has malicious intent, it deserves outright condemnation.

The needs and aspirations of South African citizens are always brought to the fore by minority parties represented in councils and legislatures.
