After months of fierce demonstrations over the government's decision to include the Merafong Municipality, which includes Khutsong, into North West the people who seem to have suffered most are school pupils.
Though classes are reported to be normal at most schools, things seem to be getting worse at Badirile Secondary School. A teacher and a pupil who have been campaigning for an end to the school boycott were assaulted by pupils on the school premises on Monday.
The mob also went on the rampage and set classrooms and the administrative offices alight.
These criminal acts should be condemned because they nullify what started as a legitimate and justified protest with residents claiming they were not properly consulted by government on the re-demarcation process.
Residents have since turned to the constitutional court for relief. While this matter is still pending normality must prevail and teachers and pupils should be urged to return to class.
Khutsong residents must stop this violence. Their grievances have now been brought to the attention of the country's highest court.
